Email Hosting Explained...

When you send an email it is sent out via an "SMTP Server" which is a type of server which tries to deliver your mail to some-ones incoming mail server. This Server may hold on to the email for a while, until the incoming mail server is ready to accept it.

Your incoming mail server (also known as "POP3") recieves all of the email bound for you, and holds it until you are ready to collect it.

All of this means that you do not have to be on the internet at the same time as the person you are sending mail to.
